Transporting personal effects requires thorough planning and there are many things to consider.  Samskip employees are happy to assist you to ensure the transport goes as smooth as possible.

Where to start?

1. Volume

The first thing is to find out how much volume you willl be transporting. Here you can calculate the cubic measure of your personal effects.
Note: If the quantity is 14 cubic meters or more, it is often cheaper to lease a container.

2. Quote

Once the volume has been evaluated, you need a quote for the transport.  In order to get a formal quotation for the transport, please fill out the quote request.

3. Get the necessary documents

Fill out the Booking and insurance form (packing list) while the personal effects are being packed. It is important to mark all boxes with the name, address and phone number of the receiver. It is advised to examine the contents list before packing, and use it as a guide while labeling.

Note: Have the list in English and/or in the language of the destination country. Booking and contents lists shall be submitted to Samskip in Reykjavík before departure.

4. Booking transport

Transport must be booked at Samskip´s customer service, tel. +354 458 8000 at least 7 days prior to vessel departure if Samskip has been requested to pick up the personal effects.

5. Cargo delivery

Personal effects must be received by Samskip 3 days before vessel departure. Samskip picks-up FCL personal effects anywhere in Europe and brings them to the port for an additional charge.

6. Vessel´s arrival

The owner of the shipment must keep track of vessel´s arrival and be in contact with Samskip to finish the final steps of the transport process.

7. Customs clearance

Personal effects need to be cleared by customs when entering the country. Samskip subsidiary, Jonar Transport, takes care of customs clearance. Please bring the following documents to Jonar Transport, Kjalarvogi 7-15, 104 Reykjavik:

When permission has been received from the customs authorities, it must be brought to Samskip's office at Kjalarvogur to make final arrangements.

8. Payment of transport charges

Customs clearance documentation must be presented to the cashier when making payment. Samskip offers VISA or EUROCARD installment payments for Icelandic credit cards when requested.

9. When can the personal effects be delivered?

Personal effects in a whole container (FCL shipment) should be ready for delivery 24 hours after vessel arrival. If the personal effects take up less than a container (LCL), it should be ready by 8.00 on Friday. The arrival date can be seen on the consignment number. For example: S ARN 10102 DE CUX W002, means that the ship arrives on 10 October 2012.

Home delivery
Samskip offers home delivery of personal effects. The cashier provides price information for this service. If the personal effects are in a whole container (FCL), most customers choose to have it delivered to their home. Once the container has been emptied, please notify the customer service department at tel. +354 458 8000 or [email protected] and the container will be picked-up.

10.  Storage fees

Storage fees (detention, demurrage and warehouse) vary between ports.  The nearest Samskip office or agent in the destination country can provide information on local charges.  There is no charge for storing the personal effects for the first 7 days after vessel´s arrival, whether the articles arrived in a partial or whole container.
